If you would like to Download our guide simply scroll to the bottom of the page.

How to set up an EBay sellers account

In order to sell items on EBay you first need to have an EBay account. When you first register you will have a buyers account where you can buy anything you wish on EBay. In order to buy on EBay you would need to have a Paypal account in the majority of cases. In this instance we will assume you have a paypal account. If you don't simply go to Paypal.co.uk and follow the on screen instructions.

As previously said in order to sell an item on EBay you will be needing an EBay sellers account. Once you have registered your buyer account on the main navigation bar at the top simply click "sell" you will then be taken through some simple steps which verify yourself and make sure people arn't fraudulantly selling items on EBay. The steps will consist of you filling in your address and verifying it using a credit or debit card. Don't worry, no money will be taken out of your account. You will also have to verify that you are applying for your EBay sellers account via a phone call, you simply give your landline number and an automated call will give you a code that you input onto the screen. If you don't have a landline then you would either not be able to set up a sellers account or you would have to use someone elses phone (with thier permision) to recieve the phone call on.

No you have verified (or in the process of) your EBay seller account you can then choose how to pay your EBay fees. You can choose from paying via Paypal, a one time payment via credit or debit card or using a bank transfer which is abit like a standing order with differing amount a month.

The next important step is to sy which payment methods you will accept from your buyers. Most buyers prefer to pay via Paypal so if you don't have a paypal account set up or accept that method of payment you are severely limiting your audience of buyers.

How to sell on EBay

By now you should be in a position to be capable of selling your items on EBay. I shall now demonstrate effective ways to sell on EBay and how to keep your EBay fees to a minimum.

If you have the EAN number then you can simply insert this. This is the code that is at the bottom of the barcode and all the information will be brought up by EBay. It is still wise to be very descript even though EBay has filled in the details. Explain the condition of the item, why you are selling it, delivery times etc. Most buyers like to see an individual description of your individual item as it is never assumed if there are no other details it would be as if you bought it from a shop.

If you don't have the EAN or can't get it to work then simply browse through the EBay sellers categories and select the category that the item your selling fits into the best.

EBay offers lots of other selling features of course at a price. You can choose as many of these as you want, I would suggest reading the rest of this guide before making your choice.

When choosing additional features I would suggest at the most a subtitle only. When you write your title make it keyword searchable so it can be found and your buyers are intrigued enough to click on your item straight away. If you struggle to do both then make your title keyword searchable and add a subtitle that would grab your potential buyers attention. You can make your title bold and even highlight your listing. I have been registered on EBay since 2001 and have a feedback score in the 0000's and can say having these extra gimmicks have no effect, you learn to dismiss the gimmicks just like seeing a Webpage with an ad saying you've won a new phone unless it improves your listing placement.

EBay offers to put additional pictures on your listing...again for a small fee. It would be a good idea to take advantage of the first picture being free so it is displayed on your listing and since EBay actually accepts HTML you can add as many images as you like in your listing. Simply sign up to photobucket and upload your photos. At the bottom of your images screen on photobucket you have the choice to make HTML links for your images, do this and copy the code it gives you, it may be an idea to make the photos clickable thumbnails. Then simply go to your Listing description and click the HTML tag and paste it there. You can do this as many times as you want.

Sending your sold Item and leaving Feedback

If you are posting the item you have sold you need to make sure you have received the funds before posting. The minority of buyers are scammers and love nothing more than getting your items for nothing. Try not to accept Western Union or give out your Bank details. If the buyer claims not to have a Paypal account simply ask for a cheque or Postal Order. Only when the cheque has cleared or your payment is received in full should you send the item.

When you have received payment as the seller you should leave feedback. Unfortunately long gone are the days where you could leave negative feedback as an EBay seller. So you have the choice of leaving positive feedback or leave no feedback at all.

By now your item should have been sent and hopefully you have sent and received positive feedback. Any dipuste can be taken through EBay or Paypal. Be aware if a dispute should arise you would need to prove that you sent the item and it was sent in the condition you stated on the auction.

Some key points to note with feedback. Some people abuse this system as it is so easy to. When leaving feedback you cannot leave a negative comment with a positive feedback. You cannot bribe people with feedback and buying feedback is not permitted. If you should have any problem with these report it to EBay immediately.
